About this tour

Discover Icelands wealth of culture and history on this guided tour, Experience more than just sagas as you travel around Borgarfjordur, exploring waterfalls, craters, hot-springs, historic ruins and Bathing in the geothermal waters.  Travel at your own pace, take as much time as you wish to really appreciate all the natural beauty this country has to offer. To begin the tour you will be picked up in our electric Mercedes EQV and head to The Settlement Centre in Borgarnes, just 1 hour out side of the city, here you will have a self guided audio tour (5 Languages). There are two entertaining and educational exhibitions at the Settlement Center. While one tells the story of the first settlers, the other reveals the story of Iceland’s most important saga – Egils Saga. Egill Skalla-Grimson was a famous Viking and poet, and his saga is closely linked to the settlement period, as his father was one of the first settlers. After, you can enjoy a traditional buffet lunch at the centre (included with our tour). Next you will travel to Grábrók to explore this 3000-year-old volcanic crater on the edge of Borgarfjordur. Grábrók is one of 3 craters formed by an eruptive fissure, Take the time to walk to the outer rim and admire one of the best preserved craters in Iceland, The view from the top looking down the Vally is spectacular. We continue the journey to Barnafoss and Hraunfossar waterfalls, and without a doubt these are two of the most beautiful waterfalls on the peninsula, Glacier water flows from Langjökull along the Hvita river, pushing through the lava fields creating many spring like waterfalls over 900 meters along the river, called rivulets. The lava fields are subglacial eruptions from beneath the distant Langjökull Glacier which can be seen from the view point. The second waterfall Barnafoss being named after the "child falls" holds a story in its own that should not be missed. Next you have the option to visit Snorralaug, home to Snorri Sturluson, one of the most important figures in Icelands history, Here you can follow the story of the Icelandic historian, politician and poet with the interactive audio guide as you walk the grounds, museum and ruins of the fort. Snorri's pool can still be seen, you can no longer bath in the pool, but you can enter the turf hall that led to the main house and see how the first steam house was constructed. After a historical day its time to soak in the geothermal waters and unwind, You will visit Europe's most powerful hot spring and watch it bellow as you relax in the baths of Krauma. Deildartunguhver hot spring feeds the geothermal baths and the sounding town with an abundance of fresh water. You can finish the day with a meal at Krauma's restaurant or simply return to the city to dine.
